No More Fear
Lots of people are afraid in life. Afraid of many things. Usually we are afraid of things that haven’t even happened yet. What if I get sick? What if I lose my job? What if this happens? We fear not getting what we need in life, not being in control and a whole host of other things, rational or irrational.
Over seventy times in the King James Bible we read the command, “Fear not.” And more than twenty times it says, “Be not afraid.”
God doesn’t want us to be afraid, because fear cancels out trust. Fear urges us to try to take control of our circumstances, so we won’t be afraid anymore. But this robs us of the joy and freedom of giving God control of our lives. It undermines our trust and total dependency on Him.
The solution to fear is not courage but love. Perfect love casts out all fear. “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear” (1 John 4: 18).
The more we allow ourselves to be filled with the love of God, the less room we will have for fear. When we are confident in our Father’s immense, complete, constant love for us, we won’t be afraid anymore.
The Message puts it this way:
God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. This way, love has the run of the house, becomes at home and mature in us, so that we’re free of worry. . . . There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear. 1 John 4: 17– 18 THE MESSAGE
Let’s persist in pursuing God’s presence and being filled with His love, so we will be “well-formed” in love, with all fear banished.
Free to live and love as Father intended.
