Love and Obedience: The Better Life

Jesus says, “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him” (John 14:21). There's a direct correlation between your love for Jesus, the corresponding love of the Father, and your willingness to obey His commands.

And by the way, one of the telltale signs that you are following the Lord passionately is that lukewarm Christians will find your zeal irritating!

In her book, The Christian's Secret to a Happy Life, Hannah Whitall Smith touched on this in her day, saying, “The standard of practical holy living has been so low among Christians that the least degree of real devotedness of life and walk is looked upon with surprise, and often with disapproval by a large portion of the church”.

If you decide to go for life full-throttle as a Christian, you will meet with some disapproval, even in the community of saints because some members of the body are aggravated by this kind of passion. “Who do you think you are? Are you more spiritual than me?” Could it be that we are sometimes afraid that our own tepid condition will be revealed?

We must set our standards based on the injunctions of Scripture. That's what Hannah is urging. She says, “For the most part, the followers of the Lord Jesus Christ are satisfied with a life so conformed to the world in almost every respect that, to a casual observer, no difference is discernible”.

It's sad but true that many Christians have so little of God functioning in their lives that no one will ever walk up to them and say, “What is it about you? Tell me, how did you take that situation so well?”

We need to aspire to living a life that communicates the higher, the better…the only life.
