Power For a Purpose
“Doin' the Stuff” ~ John Wimber was my pastor for 20 years and my boss for 12. I had the privilege of traveling with him in ministry situations as well as seeing him at home. I feel very much like the others at his memorial service; I loved him deeply and felt loved by him. There are several mentoring qualities that John had mastered that I have been able to identify as I've reflected on our relationship.
John really understood the nature of influence. Proximity, frequency of contact or depth of relationship didn't hinder his mentoring style. He would take advantage of every opportunity to encourage another person. Whether it was a lengthy meeting with a group of national leaders or a casual exchange in the hallway after a service, John would exercise influence.
He would remind people of the gifts they had or simply thank them for their commitment.
Often, John would reference a quote from John Wesley that he had copied down on the inside of his Bible: “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”
John certainly took the other John's encouragement to heart and exercised positive influence in the lives of people he encountered daily.
