Emptiness to Resources

Not only does God transform the formless into order, He fills emptiness with resources. At creation, God transformed an empty earth into one filled with God’s desires: “Let there be light!” Then there was light. Soon after, God’s words further filled the earth with land and sea, fish and fowl, trees and tarantulas, and man and woman.

I was around eleven years old when I was in a Bible class at church. The teacher asked us what we wanted to do when we grew up. All the usual answers were delivered: a doctor, a teacher, a policeman, and a nurse. When my turn came, I spontaneously blurted out, “I want to marry a pastor’s daughter with blond hair and blue eyes!”

I’m not sure who was more shocked, me or everyone else in the room. Why would I have said something like that? I chastised myself. It all seemed very strange until ten years later when I stood in another church and watched a blue-eyed, blond-haired pastor’s daughter walk down the aisle to marry me. I had spoken what God had revealed to me, and the words birthed the reality. An empty spot in my life was filled by my wife, and it was God’s words which spoke that into being.

Words carry intentions. God’s words reveal what He intends to do. Whatever He does, He first speaks. He desires to fill the empty voids in peoples’ lives with Himself. He can do that through a scripture, an inner voice, a dream, or a million other means. But He also loves to speak through us. He actually likes us! He truly enjoys doing things with us! His creative activity is no exception. He loves partnering with us to fill the earth with His presence. The power of prophecy doesn’t lie in magical words. The power of prophecy is in God’s presence.

When we speak God’s words, they release the presence and power of God to accomplish what He said He would do. It is God who fills the emptiness, and He often chooses to do it with His words spoken through our mouths.
