Everything you see comes from what can’t be seen. A tree begins as a seed hidden in the ground. Fruit appears on a vine that looks bare when dormant. A child exists in an unseen form in a mother’s womb before being born. Even everyday objects like computers and cars came from someone’s idea. It was in their head before it was on your desk or in your driveway.

Colossians 1: 16 (NIV) states, For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

This is also translated in the ASV as, For in him were all things created, in the heavens and upon the earth, things visible and things invisible  .  .  .

We know that all things were created by God and for God, and Paul declares they were created through God, because they were in God. Before anything was created, it existed in God. Ephesians 1: 4 says, “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world” (NIV; emphasis added). You were in Him before you were in the world. You were in Him before there was a world. Before God said, “Let there be light,” He said, “Let there be you!”

Where did this created matter, such as light, come from? I believe it came from the uncreated One. The Bible says God is light; there is no darkness in Him (1 John 1: 5). The apostle John describes the process of creation this way:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.   He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ~ John 1: 1-5 (NIV; emphasis added)

The method that God chose to release what was inside of Him was to speak. The words, “Let there be light” from Genesis 1: 3 are properly translated, “Light in me, be.” The act of creation was God releasing His presence, His power, and His potential through His words. If it’s in your heart, eventually you will say it. Luke 6: 45 (NIV) says, “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
