Read Luke 2: 8-11 “… Do not be afraid, for I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all people.”

Have you ever been afraid? What would be your reaction if you physically saw an angel, like the shepherds did? Wouldn’t we all have reason for needing to hear his, “Don’t be afraid?”

Some of the most comforting verses in the Bible have the phrase “Don’t be afraid” or “Fear not”. You will notice, too that the reason given for not being fearful is, “for I am with you.” Does that sound familiar? It should; it is similar to one of the names given to the Savior, the Messiah— the name Immanuel, which means ‘God with us.’

Let’s look at a few of these verses, for they cover a variety of potentially scary times in our lives that God promises to be with us:

In time of weakness: “Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, surely I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41: 10

In times of trial: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine! When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…” Isaiah 43: 1-3

In watchful care of us: “But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.” Matthew 10: 30,31

When the ‘storms of life’ would overwhelm us (here Jesus comes to His disciples walking on the water): “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Matthew 14: 27

In concerns about death: “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and of Hades.” Revelation 1: 17,18

In the midst of your preparations for Christmas, are you fearful about something? Why not give those matters over to the One whose birth was announced with “Don’t be afraid”? Remember, Jesus’ coming was to be good news of great joy to all people, even you.

PRAYER:

“ Dear God, thank You for that reminder. Even in the midst of preparations for Christmas, I still have certain lingering fears. But I don’t have to be fearful, for all things are in Your hands, and You are Immanuel, God with us, God with me!”
