“Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared.” Matthew 2: 7

Timing is probably an important part of your Advent preparations. You want cards and packages to get to a particular place ‘on time’. You want to get to a Christmas program ‘on time’. Baking cookies or other treats requires that you get them out of the oven ‘at the right time’.

Do you realize how important timing is in God’s plan regarding the birth and death of Jesus and His offer of salvation to all who would believe (that is, take yourself out of your own keeping and entrust yourself into His keeping)?

His birth--Galatians 4: 4 “But when the fullness of time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law”.

His death— Romans 5: 6 “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.”

Our response— 2 Corinthians 6: 2 “At the acceptable time I listened to you, and on the day of salvation I helped you. Behold, now is the acceptable time, behold, now is the day of salvation.”

His present helps— Hebrews 4: 16 “Therefore, let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

His future plans— Luke 12: 40 “You, too, be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect.”

In your Advent preparations, realize that God’s timing is perfect. Be sensitive during this busy season to when the Lord might interrupt your plans and lists with people and events that He thinks are more important. It may be the person down the street who needs someone to talk to or for whom and with whom you could pray. It may be the child or other member of your household who needs your listening ear and attention, even for just a moment.

You might also pause to thank God for how His exact timing has worked in your life— how a ‘closed door’ ended up being a blessing because of God’s ‘right’ provision at the ‘right’ time. Maybe of how God had you at the ‘right’ place at the ‘right ‘time for you to meet your future spouse. Of how God’s answers to prayers that seemed like a ‘no’ answer were really a ‘not yet’ answer because He knew the right timing, circumstances, and people that were necessary before a ‘yes’ answer to those prayers.

PRAYER

“ O God, I am humbled and amazed at Your timing. Especially I am awed that You did not wait for me to deserve salvation, knowing that I never could deserve it. Instead, at the right time you sent Jesus to die for the ungodly, that is, people like me. O God, as I approach Christmas, may You be in charge of how I use the time You have given me. Help me to regard interruptions of my schedule as possible opportunities to participate in Your schedule. Help me to not be too busy to see and to minister to people for whom Christ also died.”
